Kangana Ranaut supports suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, says she is 'entitled to her opinions'

New Delhi:

Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut has backed former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, who has faced suspension for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad.

Taking to her Instagram stories, Kangana wrote, “Nupur is entitled to her opinions, I see all kinds of threats targeted at her, when Hindu Gods are insulted which they are almost every day we go to court, pls do that no need to play dons yourself.” She further continued “This is not Afghanistan, we have a proper functioning government which is chosen with a process called democracy… just a reminder for those who keep forgetting.”

Ranaut’s support for Nupur Sharma’s stance came hours after Delhi police provided the former BJP leader and his family with security after she claimed to have been threatened and harassed for her remarks.

Sharma has drawn attention for citing authentic Islamic hadiths about the Prophet Muhammad. The controversy erupted after AltNews co-founder Mohammed Zubair whistled at her remarks about the Prophet Muhammad during a Times Now debate.

The controversy escalated after many Islamic monarchies in the Arab world, where the rights of religious minorities are virtually non-existent, proceeded to criticize the statements made by Nupur Sharma and sanctimoniously sought an explanation from India. Facing an unprecedented diplomatic storm, BJP suspended Nupur from the party.

In the suspension letter, the party’s central disciplinary committee wrote, “You have expressed views contrary to the party’s position on various matters… Pending further inquiry, you are suspended from the party and from your responsibilities with immediate effect.”

On 7th June, Tuesday, Maharashtra Police asked Nupur Sharma to appear before them on June 22 to record her statement in connection with her alleged derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad. Also, an FIR has been registered against Sharma by the Mumbai Police in the Thane district of Maharashtra following her remarks.
