Many innocent lives were lost in the Easter Sunday terrorist attacks due to the negligent and irresponsible actions of the authorities including the former President, former Director of State Intelligence, former Secretary of Defense, former Inspector General of Police among others, Attorney-at-Law Shamil Perera PC, Archbishop His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith stated in the Supreme Court yesterday (06).
“Except for exchanging phone calls with each other they had failed to perform their duties properly,” he said.
He stated this when the 12 petitions filed seeking a declaration that Fundamental Rights were violated due to the failure of the authorities, including former IGP, former Defense Secretary, the former Prime Minister and former President to prevent the Easter Sunday terror attacks despite prior intelligence information were taken up in court yesterday.
The Bench headed by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya comprised Justices Buwaneka Aluvihare, L.T.Dehideniya, Murdu Fernando, S. Thurairajah, A.H.M.D. Navaz and Shiran Guneratne.
In his submissions, Perera stated that Nilantha Jayawardena, the former head of the state intelligence service, had acknowledged that he had received information at the state level that there were plans to carry out terrorist attacks on the Indian High Commission and important Catholic churches, but did not take any action to prevent such attacks.
The President’s Counsel pointed out that Jayewardene had stated he received important diplomatic information through a WhatsApp message that there were plans to carry out terrorist attacks on the Indian High Commission and important Catholic churches and added on Jayewardene new who his source was.
“As the Head of State intelligence, if Jayawardene knew what those important churches were, adding that those churches should have been warned,’ he added.
