Hyderabad: Tension in Bowenpally after rally in support of Nupur Sharma

Nupur Sharma Row:

Tension gripped the Bowenpally area of Hyderabad on Monday night when some people staged a rally in support of suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma.

Nupur Sharma had been suspended by the BJP after a controversy erupted over her comments regarding Prophet Muhammad during a debate on a television news channel.

It was reported that the rally took place in the Hasmathpet area. Participants lit candles and expressed support for Nupur Sharma, who has been facing death threats since her remarks.

The BJP had suspended Nupur Sharma on June 5 after her remarks sparked outrage in the country and the Arab world.

During the rally, participants carried banners and chanted slogans in support of Nupur Sharma. Soon, another group gathered at the spot and objected to the rally by raising counter slogans.

After this, the two factions came face to face, which created a tense situation in the area. However, the police intervened in time and prevented the situation from deteriorating.

According to reports, Hyderabad police as well as Cyberabad police have intensified vigilance in the area and deployed forces to maintain law and order. Shops in the area are also closed today.

A policeman said that the trouble started when Prakash, a local BJP activist, led a group near Ambedkar’s statue to raise slogans in support of Nupur Sharma.

According to Municipal Commissioner CV Anand, the group rallied without the permission of the police. Anand said that the police would book the rally organizer as well as the participants. Similar action will be taken against the other faction.

The commissioner denied any violence during Monday’s incident.
