Hotel employee, two others remanded for theft

Three suspects including a hotel employee who allegedly stole a gold necklace worth Rs.100,000 and USD 9,600 belonging to the hotel owner, another hotel employee who helped with the sale of the necklace and the buyer were remanded until June 2 by Galle Acting Magistrate Lalith Pathirana.

The complainant who returned from Italy after being employed there for about 10 years had opened a hotel in Unawatuna had recruited the first suspect on April 1 following a job advertisement published over the Internet.

Subsequently, the owner had gone to attend a funeral in Yakkalamulla after keeping the necklace and US Dollars in a plastic container in the room of his grandmother and aunty. Subsequently, the suspected hotel employee also had left on the same evening for Kalutara to see his fiancée.

As the employee did not return as he had promised, the owner had tried to contact him over the phone several times. However, he had not responded to the owner’s call.

Later on suspicion, as the hotel owner checked, he had noticed that the container with his jewellery and dollars was missing. Subsequently, the hotel owner had lodged a complaint with the Habaraduwa Police about the alleged theft.

Initiating the investigations into the complaint a group of investigators had gone to Nawalapitiya and arrested the suspects. SI Wimal of the Habaraduwa Police prosecuted.
