Gold Smuggling Case: Kerala Police used water cannons against protesting BJP Yuva Morcha activists

Thiruvananthapuram:

The Kerala Police on Saturday used water canons on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Yuva Morcha workers protesting against state Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The protestors were demanding resignation of the CM due to his alleged involvement in a gold smuggling case.

In the video, the BJP Yuva Morcha activists were seen standing firm in a circle holding one another against the heavy pressure of water. The protestors also raised slogans and held flags of the BJP.

Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate summoned the prime accused of the gold smuggling case Swapna Suresh on June 22 for interrogation.

The Kerala gold smuggling case pertains to the smuggling of gold in the state through diplomatic channels. It had come to light after 30 kg gold worth Rs 14.82 crore smuggled in a consignment camouflaged as diplomatic baggage was busted by the customs department in Thiruvananthapuram on July 5, 2019.

The case is being probed by the Enforcement Directorate, National Investigative Agency (NIA) and the customs department.

Earlier last week, the Kerala Police detained protesting activists of Youth Congress who demonstrated against the Chief Minister. The Congress activists gathered near the Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram where they demanded the Chief Minister to resign from his post.
