Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government Ministry yesterday released a circular declaring Friday as a Government holiday effective from June 24.
The Cabinet of Ministers had decided on June 13 to close government offices every Friday for three months to provide an opportunity to public officers to plant food crops in their home gardens while staying at home.
However, the circular issued by Public Administration Ministry Secretary said that the circular is not applicable for the institutions which provide essential services such as water, electricity, health, defence, education, transport, ports and airports. The circular said that officers are encouraged to engage in home gardening or cultivating short-term crops during these days on which the offices are closed.
