Election Commission reveals presidential polls schedule, know details here

New Delhi:

The Election Commission of India (EC) will announce the schedule of the presidential election today. President Ram Nath Kovind’s term is scheduled to end on July 24.

Rajiv Kumar, the Chief Election Commissioner of India, announced the schedule of the Presidential Election in a press conference. He said voting for the presidential election would take place on July 18, while votes would be counted on July 21.

He said that voting would be by e-ballot paper and nominated MPs and MLAs would not be able to vote. At the same time, Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha MPs and all MLAs will be voters in the Presidential elections.

In this election 776 MPs and 4033 MLAs will take part in voting. With this, there will be a total of 4809 votes for the presidential election.

The President is elected by the members of the Constituency, consisting of elected members of both the Houses of Parliament and elected members of the Legislative Assemblies of all the States, including the National Capital Territory of Delhi and the Union Territory of Puducherry.

Nominated members of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha or state legislatures are not eligible to join the electorate and, therefore, are not eligible to participate in elections. Similarly, members of the Legislative Councils are not eligible for the presidential election.

According to Article 62 of the Constitution, the next President must be elected before the end of the term of the current President. In 2017, the election for the presidency of India was held on July 17 and the result was declared on July 20.

A President is elected by the members of the Constituency consisting of elected members of the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and the State Legislative Assemblies and the Union Territories of Delhi and Puducherry. Members of the Legislative Councils and nominated members are not part of the constituency. Among all these, the value of votes is highest in Electoral College in Uttar Pradesh.

In the recent scenario, the BJP-led NDA is clearly a strong one, citing recent victories in four of the five states (Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur). Although the alliance does not have a majority in the Rajya Sabha, the alliance’s presidential candidate will definitely get the upper hand.

Nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha or state legislatures are not eligible to join the electorate and, therefore, are not eligible to participate in elections. Similarly, members of the Legislative Councils are not eligible for the presidential election.
