Sri Lanka Customs seized five cars worth over Rs.150 million sent to the country illegally. These vehicles have been found in two containers which were brought to the country under the guise of importing spare parts. One of the containers in which three luxury cars were found was imported from the UK to an addressee in Yatiyantota.
Customs officials also opened two containers with a stock of lubricant oil, lighters and whiskey bottles which were imported illegally. These containers were opened in the presence of Customs Director General Major General (Rtd) Vijitha Ravipriya said at the Customs warehouse complex in Orugodawatte yesterday. The Customs Director General said that these vehicles have been shipped to the country at a time when vehicle imports have been banned due to the present economic situation here.
“Over 2500 litres of lubricant oil and 1,300 whisky bottles were also found from a container. Importing of these items to the country illegally deprives millions of income to the government”, he said.
He said Customs officials have identified a number of individuals who were involved in importing vehicles and other goods to the country illegally. He said the lubricant oil has been sent from Dubai.
Customs officials said that these two containers have been imported by misusing the concessions granted by the government for the Sri Lankan expatriate workers overseas.
