Court rejects police motion to thwart protest

Colombo Chief Magistrate Nandana Amarasinghe yesterday rejected a request made by the Cinnamon Gardens Police to issue an order preventing members of the Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF) from entering several roads in Colombo during a planned protest from Nelum Pokuna   Theatre to the University Grants Commission.

The Cinnamon Gardens Police sought an order to prevent the IUSF protesters from entering several roads, including Kannangara Mawatha, Flower Road and the Nelum Pokuna Roundabout.

Further an Order was sought to prevent IUSF members from behaving violently and from obstructing the duties of Police officers.

The Magistrate stated that Court will not issue orders against peaceful protests.

However, the Magistrate denied Police’s request and instructed the Police to take action under provisions of the Police Ordinance, if protesters behaved in a violent manner.
