A one-and-a-half-year-old child from Wattalpola, North Panadura had fallen into an unprotected toilet pit and died yesterday.
The child was playing in the back yard with his two older sisters of 7 and 11 years and several other children while the mother was in the kitchen.
As the child was not to be seen for some time, the parents had looked for the child and had seen the child in the pit. The child was taken out of the pit with the help of neighbours and rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead upon admission.Investigations had revealed that the toilet pit which is around 6 feet deep, was unprotected and merely covered on the surface with a metal sheet and cardboard.
