A bullet which had been stuck in the lung of a man who was admitted to the Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit of Galle Karapitiya Teaching Hospital after being seriously injured in a shooting was removed successfully. The blockage has been removed through Cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Physiotherapist at the hospital’s Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit Asanka Maddumaarachchi, under the supervision of Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Dr. Tolusha Harischandra operated on the victim and removed the man’s obstruction in the left lung.
The victim was admitted to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital with serious injuries following a shooting at Moraketiara in Tangalle. He is 35 years.
Physiotherapist Maddumaarachchi said that with the shooting, the bullet had penetrated through the right lung and had stuck in the left lung. The man who was critically injured in the shooting underwent a surgery performed by Dr.Harischandra. Later Asanka Maddumaarachchi performed physiotherapy treatment to remove the bullet through victim’s mouth.
Cardiologist and Thoracic Surgeon Dr.Harischandra performed the sharp-witted cardiac surgery. It was a situation where even a pipe could not get the bullet out. The X-ray image was examined and the injured person’s abdomen was compressed in an attempt to take the blocked bullet out through the trachea and the mouth. However it was through physiotherapy that the blockage was taken out. The pellet is about an inch long and has a diameter of about two millimeters, Maddumaarachchi said.
