BJP leader arrested for social media post 4 days after Kanpur violence

Kanpur: 

Four days after the violence broke out in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, a BJP leader was arrested on charges of making insulting tweets about Prophet Muhammad. Police said that BJP youth wing office-bearer Harshit Srivastava was trying to spoil the atmosphere through his allegedly objectionable post.

The arrested leader Harshit Srivastava is a member of the youth wing of the BJP and a member of the student council. 

Kanpur’s top police officer Vijay Singh Meena said, “His posts were objectionable. The police took immediate action and registered a case under the relevant sections, after which he was arrested.”

He said, “The policy of the government is very clear. If anyone tries to spread communal frenzy or disturb social harmony, fair and strict action will be taken.”

Violence erupted in parts of Kanpur after Friday prayers, as members of the two groups clashed and markets closed in protest of BJP leader Nupur Sharma for his remarks against Prophet Muhammad during a TV debate on the Gyanvapi issue.

On Monday, Kanpur police had released posters with 40 pictures of people allegedly involved in the violence. Police are said to have collected photographs of the accused through several videos of the incident, including videos captured on CCTV and mobile phones.

More than 50 people, including the main accused Zafar Hayat, have been arrested so far and a case has been registered against more than 1,500 named and unknown persons in connection with the violence, in which more than 40 were injured.
