BJP does not want caste-based census as they do religion-based politics: Maharashtra Congress

Nagpur:

Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole on Saturday accused the Bhartaiya Janata Party (BJP) of doing religon-based politics claiming that the saffron party does not want to conduct caste-based census.

“BJP does not want to do a caste-based census because they do politics on the basis of religion. The role of Congress is clear, there should be a caste-based census as this will help in resolving several issues,” said the state Congress President.

Meanwhile, another significant party of Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi, the NCP also demanded for conducting the survey in Maharashtra in order to find out the social and economic differences among various communities.

Maharashtra NCP president and water resources minister Jayant Patil informed that a request will be made to the state Cheief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to convene an all party meeting where the discussion will be made regarding the caste-based census.

The political slugfest around the castbased census started from Bihar. In an all party meeting the state, it was decided to conduct the census to record details of all communities along with their financial capabilitie and other social parameters.

However, Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav said, “The resolution (for caste-based census) was passed twice by the Assembly. Delegation met the PM. We have written to all parties. Yet the BJP denied.”

“We announced to agitate after giving them an ultimatum. Eventually, the BJP was compelled and it had to stand by our idea and support it in Bihar. But the BJP is against the caste-based census in other states and in the country. Isn’t it amazing!” he added.
