SJB amenable to BASL’s proposals on 21A

The passage of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution, which aims at abolishing the Executive Presidency and bringing in progressive changes to the public administration, is necessary to overcome the current political impasse, Opposition Leader and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Leader Sajith Premadasa said.

Speaking to the media after the meeting between the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) and the SJB yesterday morning at the BASL premises, the Opposition Leader said that the set of proposals of the BASL and the 21st Amendment proposed by the SJB are in sync.

“The BASL has presented an important and progressive set of proposals. We are ready to go forward based on those proposals. We thank them for its role and invite it to be the mediator to carry forward the relevant discussions in a transparent and trustworthy manner,” the Opposition Leader said.

He said that the executive presidential system was the main cause of the present political chaos, and it should be abolished immediately. “We have reiterated this fact, and we are not ready to change that stance,” he added.

Responding to a question by a journalist on the SJB’s stance on forming an All-Party Government, the Opposition Leader said, “What is important for us is not crowning politicians, but overcoming the present crisis. We have a national duty. We are ready to make all sacrifices to save the people from their current sufferings. The BASL representatives went to meet President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The SJB awaits the President’s reactions to the SJB’s stance on the 21st Amendment,” he told the media.
