Punjab: Russia-made rocket launcher recovered near Mohali attack site

New Delhi:

During the investigation of the attack on the headquarters of the Intelligence Unit of the Punjab Police in Mohali, a rocket launcher has been recovered from a place located about 1 km from the incident spot. The rocket-propelled grenade or RPG has been identified as RPG-22 and is Russia-made.

Director General of Police (DGP) VK Bhavra said that they have got some leads and the matter will be resolved soon.

A statement issued by the Punjab Police said, “Several suspects have been detained and questioned. The launcher used in the attack has been recovered by the police and all the leads developed in the case are being closely followed.”

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said that those trying to spoil the atmosphere of the state would be punished severely.

On Monday night, an RPG was fired at the Intelligence Wing headquarters of the Punjab Police in Mohali, triggering an explosion that shattered windows and caused a portion of the false ceiling to collapse on impact. No injuries or casualties were reported.

The Punjab Police had issued an official statement saying, “A minor explosion was reported at the Punjab Police Intelligence Headquarters in Sector 77, SAS Nagar at around 7.45 pm. No damage has been reported. Senior officers are on the spot and have investigated. Forensic teams have been called.”

According to reports, two suspects arrived in a car and fired an RPG at the intelligence office building.

The blast came a day after Punjab Police foiled possible terror attacks and arrested two people in a village in the state’s Tarn Taran district.

Earlier, police arrested some ‘Khalistani’ suspects for receiving massive and continuous drone deliveries of explosives, weapons and drugs across the border.

A case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and Explosives Act has been registered at Mohali’s Sohana police station in connection with the incident.
