The Government is planning to introduce a price formula for imported fertilizer in a bid to control arbitrary price increases, Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Janaka Wakkumbura said.
He said that companies that import fertilizer will have to abide by the new price formula.
He was speaking at a discussion with representatives of farmers’ organizations in the Polonnaruwa district on Saturday.
Farmers are now facing severe difficulties due to the sale of fertilizers at high prices by private companies that import fertilizers.
Minister Janaka Wakkumbura said that the Government has taken immediate steps to import fertilizer to prevent this situation and that the necessary steps have already been taken to provide the imported fertilizer to the farmers at concessionary prices.
Meanwhile, a fertilizer ship has arrived at the Colombo port and it is reported that the fertilizer is being unloaded.
