PIL filed against MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma for 'promoting online betting, gambling'

A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed against cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan in Madhya Pradesh High Court. They allege that all of them are encouraging youth to bet and gamble online. 

The petitioner has demanded a ban on online betting and gambling. These online betting and gambling are already banned in states including Bihar, Telangana and Karnataka. 

According to the Advocate Vinod Dwivedi, these celebrities are the idol of many youths, encouraging them to play online betting. These young people are losing their money in betting, committing suicide due to depression, and getting involved in crimes. 

A notice has been issued to the parties, but no one responded. The court has appointed the next hearing for May 10, permitting the petitioner to revise the petition. The court questioned the petitioner that he has urged a ban on online games, but had not made the government a party.

For the uninversed, MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are playing Indian Premier League 2022.

Recently, Dhoni has come out as a captain of Chennai Super Kings for the second time but his team is still struggling to make it to the playoffs. While Rohit Sharma is already leading Mumbai Indians but the team has been out of the playoff spree this season. 

On the other hand, before the start of the IPL season, Virat Kohli has decided to drop down from the captaincy of Royal Challengers Bangalore as he wants to give himself some space and handle his workload. Now, he is playing as a batsman for the same team.

Speaking about the international level, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are part of the Indian team, while Dhoni has retired from international cricket.
