There was high voltage drama in the Shaheen Bagh area of Delhi regarding the MCD bulldozers that arrived to remove illegal encroachment.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Amanatullah Khan and a large number of people reached the spot to protest against the MCD’s anti-encroachment drive. In view of this protest which lasted for hours, the MCD team had to return with their bulldozers.
A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court regarding this matter.
The Supreme Court has asked the south Delhi administration on a plea why it started its drive to demolish the alleged encroachment at Shaheen Bagh when the court was to hear the issue on Monday.
The court asked the petitioner to provide a copy of the petition to the Solicitor General. The petition will be heard at 2 pm.
In the Jahangirpuri demolition case, the Supreme Court said that it will hear the matter after the holiday as it does not have a copy of the reply filed by the government. On April 21, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) had demolished several houses and shops in Jahangirpuri as part of an anti-encroachment drive.
Bulldozers reached Shaheen Bagh on Monday as the South Delhi Municipal Corporation stepped up its anti-encroachment drive in the area. In protest against the anti-encroachment campaign, a large number of police personnel and Congress workers were also present on the spot, besides the local people who were protesting by blocking the way of bulldozers and excavation.
Residents of Shaheen Bagh claimed that there is no illegal encroachment on public land. Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan said the demolition was being done to “deliberately disturb law and order”.
The encroachment drive in SDMC areas was planned after Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta wrote to the mayor of the party-ruled civic body on April 20 to remove encroachments by “Rohingyas, Bangladeshis and anti-social elements”.
