Yesterday’s Ordinary Level Exam restored calm and peace to the country after a long stressful period, Commissioner General of Examinations, L.M.D. Dharmasena yesterday told the Daily News. “I am pleased to announce that the national ordinary level examinations and the examination operations throughout the country’s nine provinces yesterday was a 100 percent success,” said Dharmasena.
An elated Commissioner General of Examinations said, “Should death devour me, and I don’t think I get knocked as hard because this year’s examination has seen something that people have been unable to experience for quite a while. That is that people can come together and still create peace even in the most difficult times for the children.”
“The examination was held free of any interruptions from protests and transport problems. There were no barriers on roads in front of petrol stations and at gas delivery shops. Nobody blocked the roads. The people of this country acted with such love and care for the children and ensured that they go to their examination centers with safety and sit at their exams,” he said.
“The people provided them with extra security and safety despite it being a stressful time for everyone,” he said.
“People did not participate in protests today (23). They understood the situation and responded as responsible citizens to Education Minister Susil Premajayantha’s appeal to support the students sitting the exam,” he said.
“We told them that the present badge of Ordinary Level exam goers deserve their support more than at any other time because they are sitting the exam after five to six months due to the COVID pandemic and various other situations,” he said.
He said nobody blocked the roads with vehicles or lines of gas cylinders. They refrained from such actions and paved the way for the exams.
“Everybody supported. All state institutions- Ceylon Electricity Board, Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, Sri Lanka Transport Board, Disaster management Centre- essential services, regional education authorities, teaching staff, examination administrators, and I must say the private bus owners supported the students to go their examination centers on time,” he said.
Many private buses and SLTB buses have taken the children to their examination centers free of charge. I must not fail to mention the role played by Mr. Gemunu Wijeratna. Sri Lanka’s Private Bus Owners’ Association President in assisting the students.
