Minister debunks fake news over fuel price hike

Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekara said that there would be no fuel price hike again in the immediate future. “Messages circulating on a price increase in the Indian Oil Company (IOC)  fuel are completely false. No price increase in the IOC or the Ceypetco.Will take legal action against those who have posted and shared fake and false news to mislead the public,” the Minister Tweeted on Saturday night.

He also tweeted that an average of 4000 MT of Auto Diesel and 2500MT of Octane 92 Petrol are released to the market daily. He added that 40,000 MT of Petrol and Crude Oil to be unloaded from ships today.

He told the media that the issue of Auto Diesel to the market would be limited till the Norochcholai Power Plant is restored. Commenting on the complaints of quality of fuel, the Minister said that the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) has commenced random checks on fuel quality in all fuel stations islandwide. “There have been complaints over fuel quality and fuel stations mixing petroleum products with water, kerosene and other liquids,” he said, also warning that licenses of fuel stations violating guidelines would be immediately cancelled.

Issuing a press release on Friday the CPC said that consumers could call 0115 234234 and 0115 455130 if they have any queries regarding the quality of fuel. The release said that fuel samples from the Narammala filling station have been sent to the laboratories responsible for investigation.
