Maharashtra: ASI bars visits to Aurangzeb's tomb after MNS threat

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has decided to bar visits to the tomb of Mughal ruler Aurangzeb located at Khuldabad in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra, for 5 days.

This order has been issued by ASI Superintendent Minalkumar Chawle. The committee that looks after Aurangzeb’s tomb has informed that after the written order by the ASI, visits to the site have been stopped from the evening of May 18.

Aurangzeb, the

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) had questioned the need to maintain the grave of the  Mughal ruler. 

After the warning by the MNS, the visits to the tomb have been stopped for 5 days. Last week, the police had also strengthened security arrangements at Aurangzeb’s grave. 

The political atmosphere in Maharashtra has become explosive after AIMIM MLA Asaduddin Owaisi visited Aurangzeb’s grave.

A few years ago, Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray had raised the question that “why is Aurangzeb’s grave needed here”. The rumor of excavation of Aurangzeb’s grave was spread on social media only yesterday, after which the atmosphere became more tense.
