Loudspeaker Row: 'Maharashtra police capable of handling any kind of law and order situation,' assures DGP

Mumbai:

The Maharashtra Director General of Police (DGP) on Tuesday assured that the state police is capable of handling any kind of law and situation in the state after the Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil chaired a meeting. He appealed the people to maintain peace in the state.

Maharashtra DGP Rajnish Seth said, “Today Home Minister held a review meeting regarding law and order situation. Maharashtra police is capable of handling any kind of law and order situation. State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) and Home Guards deployed in the state. I appeal to everyone to maintain peace.”

The Home Minister convened the meeting to discuss on the loudspeaker row in Maharashtra as well as the situation prevailing in the state due to the controversy over installing loudspeakers at religious places.

Walse Patil had earlier informed about holding the meeting with the police officials and said, “The state’s director general of police (Rajnish Seth) and Mumbai CP (Sanjay Pandey) will sit together and prepare guidelines (over the use of loudspeakers) for the state. These guidelines will be issued in a day or two. All will have to implement them,” reported PTI.

It is worth noting that the discussion over the installation of the loudspeakers came after the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief warned of taking ‘action’ if the the devices (loudspeakers) will not be removed.

Thackeray in his speech on Sunday said, “Today is the first day of Maharashtra (Maharashtra Day). I won’t listen from 4th day from now. Wherever we’ll see a loudspeaker, we’ll also chant Hanuman Chalisa in front of the loudspeaker. I request Police to stop loudspeakers. If they won’t listen, we’ll take action.”

He reiterated, “This is not a religious issue. It is a national issue but if you stop us, we will also take a stand. Loudspeakers are not as per law. Supreme Court already said that it was illegal.”

The MNS chief held a mega rally at Sanskrutik Mandal Maidan in Aurangabad on May 1.
