Key suspect in MP’s killing arrested

Police arrested one of the main suspects in connection with the killing of SLPP MP, Amarakeerthi Athukorala yesterday.

Athukorala and his security guard died in the Nittambuwa town on May 9 after the country erupted into violence when a mob of government loyalists attacked the youth in the anti-government protests at Galle Face.

Police spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa told the Daily News that the police have arrested seven suspects in connection with MP’s death since the event.

The suspects arrested from Nittambuwa in connection with the incident so far are in the ages 29,39, and 44, according to police.

“The suspect arrested today is a prime suspect in this case. He is 29 years and is a bus driver from Nittambuwa,” SSP Thalduwa said.

According to the police account of the incident on May 9, the deceased MP had opened fire on the protestors before he had killed himself with his own handgun during the clash with the protestors in Nittambuwa.

SSP Thalduwa said, “But the doctors’ report confirmed otherwise, and that the MP had died due to multiple injuries.He had died due to fractures and internal bleeding”.“His was an assault-inflicted death,” he explained. Athukorala’s police bodyguard had died of gunshot injuries.

SSP Thalduwa stated that police investigations into this matter are ongoing to identify what transpired and who opened fire.
