Kannada resonates for first time in Canada's parliament as Indian-origin MP delivers speech in mother tongue

Indian-origin Canadian MP Chandra Arya spoke in his mother tongue Kannada in the Canadian Parliament on Thursday. Chandra Arya said that this is the first time that the Kannada language has been spoken outside India in any Parliament of the world. He said that the history of this Dravidian-based Indian language is very old.

Re-elected to Parliament in 2019

In his tweet, Chandra Arya wrote, ‘In the Parliament of Canada, I spoke in my mother tongue Kannada. This beautiful language has a very old history and about 50 million people speak this language. This is the first time that Kannada has been spoken outside India in a parliament in the world. Hailing from the Tumakuru district of Karnataka, Arya is a member of Liberation Party of Canada. He has been re-elected to Parliament in the 2019 federal election.

Completed education in Karnataka

Chandra Arya has completed his graduation in engineering and post graduation in business administration in Karnataka only. Before joining politics, he was working in the high-technology sector. He lives in Nepean with his wife Sangeet who works for the Ottawa Catholic School Board. His son Sid is a CPA, CA (Chartered Professional Accountant, Chartered Accountant).
