Johnny Depp and Amber Heard: From lovers to 'liars'

Johnny Depp’s lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard continues to make headlines in the Tinsel town. The couple, who married in 2015 after courting for four year, called it quits in 2016. In April 2022, the ongoing legal dispute between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard finally went to trial, years after The Pirates of Carribean star filed a defamation suit against his ex-wife over an article she wrote for The Sun. As the couple continues to battle it out in the court, here’s a comprehensive breakdown of their relationship timeline so far. 

The First Meeting

Johnny Depp was in a committed relationship with Vanessa Paradis when he met actress Amber Heard on the set of “The Rum Diary” in 2009. .  

On the witness stand in the defamation trial, Depp described the connection he felt with Heard when a scene called for their characters to kiss in a shower in The Rum Diary.

“That moment, was, it was, it felt like something, it felt like something I should not be feeling,” Depp said, explaining they were each in other relationships at the time. “I think there was something in the kiss in the shower that was real.”

It’s Official!

Depp and Heard began dating in 2011, but it wasn’t until 2012 they officially came out as a couple. 

Depp and his longtime partner Vanessa Paradis, who share two children, Lily-Rose and John Christopher, parted ways in 2012. The actor addressed his breakup with Vanessa in a July 2013 interview in Rolling Stone, where the actor said that “relationships are very difficult.”

First Red Carpet Appearance

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard remained private about their relationship until they made their first appearance as a couple at the 7th Annual Heaven Gala in January 2014. A few days later, it was reported that the couple is engaged. 

The Wedding Bells 

Depp and Heard married in a private ceremony in Los Angeles. Their wedding was a low-kept affair that only saw family and close friends in attendance. 

Trouble in Paradise

Heard filed for divorce after 15 months of marriage, claiming he abused her while under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Depp denied the accusations and a $7 million settlement was reached out of court in August 2016.

‘Wife beater’

Heard penned a op-ed for The Washington Post in December of 2018 about the treatment of women in domestic abuse cases. She did not mention Depp by name, but referred him as ‘Wife Beater’ 

The Defamation Suit

Depp sued Heard for $50 million for defamation over her Washington Post piece as he claimed that it cost him financial loss as he was thrown out of many projects. 

The Legal Battle 

In 2020, Depp brought the publisher of The Sun to court for libel in the UK over a 2018 article that claimed he was violent against Heard.

The trial for Depp’s defamation case against Heard began in Virginia on April 12. Depp acknowledged in his testimony that he and Heard had arguments during their relationship but said, “Never did I myself reach the point of striking Ms. Heard in any way nor have I ever struck any woman in my life.”
