Delimitation Commission submits final report, recommends 43 Assembly seats for Jammu, 47 for Kashmir.

The Delimitation Commission for Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday finalised the delimitation order and submitted it to the Election Commission of India wherein it has recommended 43 Assembly seats for Jammu division and 47 seats to the Kashmir region.

The delimitation order will come into effect from the date to be notified by the Central Government. 

Out of the 90 Assembly Constituencies in the region, 43 will be part of Jammu region and 47 for Kashmir region keeping in view the provisions of Section 9(1)(a) of the Delimitation Act, 2002 and Section 60(2)(b) of Jammu & Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019.

As per the commision handout, after consultation with Associate Members, representatives of political parties, citizens, civil society groups, nine assembly constituencies have been reserved for STs, out of which, six are in Jammu region and three assembly constituencies in the Valley.

The commision handout further said that, there were five Parliamentary Constituencies in the region. The Delimitation Commission has seen the Jammu & Kashmir region as one single Union Territory. Therefore, one of the Parliamentary Constituency has been carved out combining Anantnag region in the Valley and Rajouri & Poonch of Jammu region. By this reorganisation each Parliamentary Constituency will have equal number of 18 Assembly Constituencies each.

Names of some assembly constituencies have also been changed keeping in view the demand of local representatives said the commision handout.

The delimitation commission has also recommended to the Government of India to reserve two seats for Kashmiri migrants in the Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory.

The commission, has recommended to the Government of India to make provisions of at least two members (one of them must be female) from the community of Kashmiri migrants in the Legislative Assembly and such members may be given power at par with the power of the nominated members of the Legislative Assembly of Union Territory of Puducherry.

Meanwhile PDP President Mehbooba Mufti while speaking on the commission report said “Delimitation commission have become extension of BJP, We reject this delimitation report as we don’t trust it. This is nothing but only an attempt to disempower people of Jammu Kashmir” said PDP President Mehbooba Mufti while reacting upon the final delimitation order finalised by the commision. While as BJP state president Ravinder Raina praised the commission report and said the commision has undone the injustice with people of Jammu and Kashmir by drafting the neutral report taking care of all sections of the people living in UT of Jammu and Kashmir.
