Delhi Police detains AAP MLA during MCD drive in Mongolpuri

New Delhi:

The Delhi Police on Tuesday detained Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Mukesh Ahlawat even as the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) launched an anti-encroachment drive in the Mongolpri area. According to the Delhi Police, this was a pre-emptive move to prevent trouble during the NDMC demolition drive.

“The anti-encroachment drive is going on, local MLA (AAP MLA Mukesh Ahlawat) came here and said what’s the need for using JCBs. To prevent the situation from getting jeopardised, we have detained the MLA,” Sammer Sharma, DCP, Outer District, Delhi Police.

The detained MLA questioned if this is even an encroachment drive. He said, “When people have vacated the area, why are they (North MCD) creating inconvenience to them by using Bulldozers by surrounding them. We’re against it and it should be stopped. They need to prove first that there’s encroachment.”

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police has registered an FIR against AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan and his supporters for obstructing the anti-encroachment drive at Shaheen Bagh. This comes after the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) formally filed a complaint with the station house officer of Shaheen Bagh police station.

A day earlier, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) ran an anti-encroachment drive in Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh area which was highly condemned. The locals claimed the SDMC had not produced notice in prior and blamed the latter for targetting one minority through such actions.

The SDMC today arrived at New Friends Colony in South Delhi with buldozers to demolish illegal structures as announced a day prior by Rajpal, Chairman standing committee, SDMC central zone.
