In view of the heatwave in a large part of the country, the central government has issued an alert. The Union Health Secretary has asked all the departments of the Center and the states to follow the guidelines issued last year to deal with heatstroke and alert the general public.
According to the Health Secretary, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had already issued a forecast of above-normal temperatures in large areas of western, central and northern India from March to May.
The Union Ministry of Health had issued an advisory on March 15 and issued an advisory to the states to make necessary preparations for this. The National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) in mid-April had asked all the states to make elaborate arrangements for the treatment of heat-related diseases at health centers.
The NCDC is monitoring heat-related diseases at the district level under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Program. The Union Health Secretary has asked the states to send data related to this to NCDC every day. So that central assistance can be made available as per the need. The Health Secretary has asked the states to make available an adequate quantity of medicines for the treatment of heat-related diseases at the health centres. Along with this, the need to keep drinking water in sufficient quantity has also been stressed.
In view of the power shortage in many states, the Union Health Secretary has asked the states to ensure uninterrupted power supply at health centers so that ACs, coolers and fans can be operated continuously. NDCD has shared detailed information about the dos and don’ts with the states to avoid heatstroke and treat its associated diseases. The Health Secretary has asked the states to alert the general public about this.
