Mumbai:
Thane police in Maharashtra on Monday registered a case against BJP national spokesperson Nupur Sharma for her alleged objectionable remarks against Prophet Muhammad during a televised news debate. According to reports, an official has made the information public in this regard.
Mumbra police station senior inspector Ashok Kadlag said Sharma has been booked under sections 298, 294, 153A and 505B of the IPC for hurting religious sentiments and other offences.
At a rally in Bhiwandi district on Saturday, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi had asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take action against Sharma.
The case has been registered based on a complaint made by Irfan Abubakar Shaikh, a hotelier from South Mumbai. He works as Joint Secretary with Raza Academy. Senior Inspector Shrikant Rajarampatil of Pydhonie police station confirmed that an FIR has been registered against Sharma.
Shaikh alleged in his complaint that he found a Twitter link on his WhatsApp. The link contains a video debate on the Gyanvapi Masjid, which was broadcast on an English news channel, in which Sharma along with three other members participated. Sheikh alleged that Sharma made objectionable remarks about Islam and its prophet in an attempt to defame him.
BJP spokesperson Sharma later said on a TV channel, “The video that was aired did not show the entire debate. Parts of the video were broadcast by Mohammad Zubair, who claims to be a fact-checker. But I will say He is a fake spreader and there are tweets circulated with the intention of disturbing communal harmony.”
He further shared, “Whatever I have quoted during the debate, I have said from a particular religious scripture. If I am wrong then some learned cleric will come forward and explain. Against me and my family, I have to kill me.” Getting threats, rape threats and beheading threats. He also tagged Delhi Police in his tweet.”
