Purnia (Bihar):
A major accident took place on NH-57 in Bihar’s Purnia on Monday morning, in which at least eight migrant laborers were crushed to death, while six others were seriously injured.
All the victims were traveling in a truck loaded with iron rods. This area comes under the jurisdiction of Jalalgarh Police Station, about 20 km from Purnia district headquarters.
The injured have been admitted to the Government Medical College, Purnia, where their condition is said to be critical.
Confirming the deaths, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) SK Saroj said the labourers, all residents of Rajasthan and were on their way from Siliguri in West Bengal to Jammu. The driver lost control and overturned on the side of the road.
The seven deceased have been identified as Ishwar Lal, Basu Lal, Kaba Ram, Kanti Lala, Harish, Mani Lala and Dushyant, while the identity of the eighth is yet to be ascertained. All the laborers were residents of Khurvarha in Udaipur, Rajasthan.
Eyewitnesses said the truck driver lost control and rammed into a divider on the national highway before falling on the roadside.
Jalgarh and Kasba police were dispatched to the spot and JCBs were pressed into service to rescue the laborers and retrieve the bodies of the dead.
The driver and his assistant fled the scene soon after the accident. An investigation is on and detailed information is awaited.
