Angry over not getting Rajya Sabha seat, Anand Sharma denies meeting JP Nadda

New Delhi:

Congress leader Anand Sharma, angry over not getting a Rajya Sabha seat, was being speculated to meet BJP President JP Nadda. But Anand Sharma denied saying that it has been spread by mischievous people.

Anand Sharma has been in Rajya Sabha four times

Anand Sharma has been a member of Rajya Sabha not once but four times. Speaking on many issues in the House, his speech was liked not only by the ruling party but also by the leaders of the opposition.

Sharma was a prominent leader in the student and youth movement in India, a founding member of the NSUI, the student wing of the Congress Party. He was also the former President of the Indian Youth Congress. Sharma stressed that the country needs investment in manufacturing and for this purpose the cost of credit should be brought down. In February 2012, Sharma led a business delegation of over 120 people to improve trade relations. During this visit, he also discussed with his Pakistani counterpart Makhdoom Muhammad Amin Fahim the amendment of the existing Visa Bilateral Agreement signed in 1974 to facilitate travel by genuine businessmen from both countries.

Served as the Minister of Commerce and Industry of India

As India’s Minister of Commerce and Industry, he had taken major policy initiatives to accelerate manufacturing and attract foreign investment into India. Anand Sharma was instrumental in formulating India’s first National Manufacturing Policy (NMP) in 2011, which aimed to increase the share of manufacturing from 16 to 25 percent of GDP and create 100 million skilled jobs over a decade. To achieve this, the policy envisages setting up of Greenfield Integrated Manufacturing Cities, NIMZ-National Investment and Manufacturing Zone. Sixteen NIMZs were notified.

As the minister responsible for national investment policy, he oversaw the opening up of several sectors to FDI, including defense and civil aviation. India allowed 100% FDI in single brand retail and opened multi brand retail to foreign investors. The e-Biz project was conceptualized and launched to improve the business and investment environment.
