1730 Ukranian soldiers surrender in Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol

New Delhi: 

The Defence Ministry of Russia has stated that 1,730 Ukranian soldiers have surrendered this week at the besieged Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol.

“Over the past 24 hours, 771 militants of the Azov nationalist regiment surrendered,” the Ministry said in its daily briefing on the conflict. “In total, since May 16, 1,730 militants have surrendered, including 80 wounded,” it added.

A video was released, that showed surrendered soldiers walking in line, out of the Azovstal steel plant. Some were seen as wounded while others were seen using crutches. They were being frisked along the way out of the plant by the Russian troops. The Ministry said that the injured soldiers were being taken to the hospital in eastern Ukrainian territories that is under Russian control.

Ukraine has hinted towards seeking a prisoner swap for the fighters who surrendered at Azovstal. Moscow is yet to give an answer on the issue.

As the Russian forces continue their effort to win over Kyiv, Mykhailo Podolyak, an advisor to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, was involved in several rounds of talk with Russian side. He said, “a ceasefire with Russia is impossible without total Russian troop withdrawal.”

“Until Russia is ready to fully liberate occupied territories, our negotiating team is weapons, sanctions and money,” Podolyak tweeted.
