'Will continue to take action in future to protect India’s national security': I&B Min Anurag Thakur

A day after the Centre blocked as many as 16 YouTube, Minister of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Anurag Thakur said that the government will continue take such actions to protect national security of India. 

He said, “Government has blocked 16 YouTube channels for spreading false, unverified information to create panic, incite communal disharmony and disturb public order in India. We will continue to take similar action in the future also to protect India’s national security.”

The Ministry said, “YouTube channels were spreading false, unverified information to create panic, incite communal disharmony and disturb public order in India. Blocked YouTube-based news channels had a viewership of over 68 crore.”

It also informed that 10 YouTube news channels were from India while six channels were form Pakistan.

Earlier in the month, the Ministry had blocked a total number of 22 YouTube based news channels, three (3) Twitter accounts, one (1) Facebook account, and one (1) news website.

The blocked YouTube channels had a cumulative viewership of over 260 crore, and were used to spread fake news, and coordinated disinformation over social media on subjects sensitive from the perspective of national security, India’s foreign relations, and public order.

This was the first time action that were taken on the Indian YouTube based news publishers since the notification of the IT Rules, 2021 in February last year. Through the blocking order, eighteen (18) Indian and four (4) Pakistan based YouTube news channels have been blocked.
