An explosion has occurred in a manhole in New York’s Times Square. The explosion was so severe that it was heard several kilometers away. Due to the blast, the glasses of the cars parked nearby were shattered and there was a stampede throughout Times Square.

The entire area of Times Square has been closed to the public after the blast. A large number of police personnel are present on the spot and apart from this there are also many fire engines. It is reported that so far no information about any casualty has come to the fore.

Videos shared on social media showed dozens of people running through busy streets, with many asking what was the loud noise. Others said they heard a loud explosion, but did not know what it was.

According to the FDNY, no casualties have been reported. Firefighters are in the process of searching the surrounding properties for any elevated carbon monoxide levels.

Officials confirmed that the fire started just before 7 p.m. and firefighters searched nearby properties and found high carbon monoxide levels in the 18-story office building. According to energy company Con Edison, the fire was caused by a cable failure.
