Punjab: SHO among several injured as rival groups clash with guns, swords in Patiala

Patiala (Punjab): 

Violent clashes broke out between two communities over a procession in Punjab’s Patiala. The tension escalated to such an extent that stone-pelting and firing started among the people. Swords were also drawn on each other from both sides.

The police somehow dispersed the chaotic elements by lathi charge. A heavy police force has been deployed for peace and order after the violent clash. It is being told that there was a dispute over ‘Khalistan Murdabad’ slogans. The Punjab Police is fully investigating the matter.

Meanwhile, an SHO of the Punjab Police suffered an injury to his hand. After this, the SSP fired in the air to control the situation. At present, the atmosphere here remains tense. A massive police force has been deployed at the spot.

SHO injured in mob attack

During this, when SHO Karanvir tried to stop some protesters, his hand was injured, after which SSP Nanak Singh reached the spot. He fired in the air to control the situation. After this, efforts are being made to control the atmosphere. Hindu organization leader Harish Singla said that the Punjab Police and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government should take strict action against these people.

During this, some news started circulating that some protesters had cut off the hand of the SHO. However, the DC of Patiala denied this and said that it is baseless. He asked not to spread such rumours.

Situation under control, don’t pay heed to rumours: IG Rakesh Agarwal

Patiala Range IG Rakesh Agarwal said that the situation is now under control. Somebody had spread a rumor, due to which there was a rift between the two sides. There is also a rumor about cutting off the hand of the SHO. Efforts are being made to calm the situation completely. He said that the police had to fire in the air to handle the situation on the spot.

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann spoke to DGP

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann said that the Patiala incident is very unfortunate. 

“I have spoken to the DGP in this regard. Peace has been restored in the area. The government is monitoring the whole matter seriously. No one will be allowed to disturb the peace. Peace and brotherhood are most important to us in Punjab,” he said.
