Protests: Lawyers write to JSC, CJ against Magistrate

A group of Attorneys calling themselves as ‘Janatha Nithignayo’ submitted a letter to Chief Justice and Judicial Service Commission (JSC) that any action instituted by the Police Department against the peaceful protesters at the Galle Face Green if needed be taken up before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court. They urged not to list such matters before Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage.

They further highlighted that the aforesaid Fort Magistrate had a close political affiliation with the present regime before he assumed duties as a Judicial Officer. Magistrate Thilina Gamage has been a suspect in an illegal possession of an elephant without a valid licence whilst he was holding post as a judicial officer. Subsequently, he was acquitted from the case filed in the Colombo High Court.
