To mark the 195th birth anniversary of the great social activist Mahatma Jyotiba Phule on Monday, a biopic on him has been announced. The film will star Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa in leading roles. While Pratik will play the role of Mahatma Phule, Patralekhaa will be seen bringing life to the character of his wife Savitri Bai Phule. While an official date is yet to be announced, the film is expected to hit theatres in 2023.
Helmed by National Award-winning director Ananth Narayan Mahadevan, the film will have a worldwide release. ‘Phule’ will be a take on the lives of social activists Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and his wife Savitri Phule whose vision and approach were way ahead of their time.
Along with the film announcement, the first looks of Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa as their respective characters were dropped on Monday with the striking resemblance to Mahatma Phule and Savitribai Phule. Pointing out the same, a netizen wrote, “How do you guys always look the part. A very important story for india today – Congratulations Pratik and @patralekhaa.”
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh took to Twitter to announce the film as he wrote, “BIOPIC ON MAHATMA PHULE ANNOUNCED: PRATIK GANDHI – PATRALEKHAA SIGNED… On #MahatmaPhule’s 195th birth anniversary today, a biopic has been announced… Titled #Phule, the biopic stars #PratikGandhi [as #MahatmaPhule] and #Patralekhaa [as #MahatmaPhule’s wife #SavitribaiPhule].”
For the unversed, Jyotiba Phule was an Indian social activist, thinker, anti-caste social reformer and writer from Maharashtra. His work extended to many fields, including eradication of untouchability and the caste system and for his efforts in educating women and oppressed caste people.
Meanwhile, Pratika Gandhi stormed into limelight with his portrayal of Harshad Mehta in Hansal Mehta’s web show Scam 1992. He also garnered critical appreciation for his most recent web show The Great Indian Murder.
Talking about Patralekhaa, she was last seen in ZEE5 show Mai Hero Boll Raha Hu.
