Pakistan: PTI leader Sardar Tanveer Ilyas becomes 14th PM of PoK amid opposition boycott

Muzaffarabad:

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Sardar Tanveer Ilyas has been elected unopposed as the 14th Prime Minister of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK).

Earlier, Sardar Abdul Qayyum Niazi had tendered his resignation as PoK PM, after which Imran Khan has made Ilyas the PTI candidate for the post. Ilyas had submitted nomination papers on behalf of the PTI, which were declared valid by the secretary of the PoK assembly.

The Express Tribune had reported that former Pakistan Prime Minister and PTI chairman Imran Khan had nominated Ilyas as the party’s candidate for the post of PM in PoK. On the other hand, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) jointly fielded Chaudhry Yasin for the post of PoK PM.

However, there was uproar in Monday’s session as well. In which the united opposition boycotted the session of the Prime Minister’s election for the PoK region. With no candidate in the running for the election, Elias garnered 33 votes in his favor.

The election of the PM of PoK was done under Article 13 of the Constitution and Rule 15 of the Legislative Assembly of Pakistan. The PTI was leading in the House with 32 members and was supported by the Muslim Convention. According to sources, Niazi’s move to resign from his post comes in the wake of rebellion against him within the party in which a no-confidence motion was presented against him by his own party.

On Tuesday, at least 25 members of the ruling PTI in PoK filed a no-confidence motion against their own PM Niazi, alleging malpractices and failure to implement the party’s manifesto. Niazi has been said to have lost the confidence of the parliamentary party due to breach of party manifesto, mismanagement, nepotism and meritocracy.

Several PTI MLAs had proposed the name of Sardar Tanveer Ilyas for the post of PM. Let us tell you that on July 5, 1975, Khan Abdul Hameed Khan was elected as the first Prime Minister of PoK. PoK has a parliamentary system since 1985. Sardar Sikandar Hayat, Sardar Atiq Ahmed Khan, and Raja Farooq Haider Khan held the office of PoK PM twice.
