Online cooking classes can enhance children's nutrition knowledge; HERE is how

New Delhi:

A team of local dietitians, chefs, and researchers started Flint Families Cook during the Covid-19 pandemic. The program is for families with children between ages 8 to 18.

This program has shown triumph in contacting youth from families with low income and enhancing self-efficacy, nutrition knowledge, and consuming fruits and vegetables among young participants.

It has enabled families to cook healthy meals together at home, using local ingredients. The duration of the program is 7.5 hours of live, online instruction over five straight weeks, children and families have understood proper methods for using knives, measuring, sauteing, roasting, and baking from a chef, while the dietician has concentrated on the nutrition and health advantages of specific food groups and nutrients.

The results of the study were posted in the ‘Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior.’

“One very important part of the class that is happening because of the virtual platform is that families are participating in the classes together as opposed to children participating in the class individually, apart from their family. We started to see parents becoming much more involved in the education and sitting at the table once the meals were prepared for a family dinner,” said Dr Amy Saxe-Custack, Michigan State University.

This online format has directly engaged families in cooking healthy meals together and grows the program’s reach to whole families, as well as vast family and friends.

In expansion to having a growing waiting list of keen families, Flint Families Cook has also managed challenges with preparing and consuming healthy foods at home. Such programming was viable and appealing to residents with alike problems with child nutrition.
