National Civil Service Day 2022: History, Purpose and Significance

Every year, April 21 is observed as National Civil Service Day. The civil service is known as the backbone of the administration of a country.  The civil service in India includes Indian Administrative Service(IAS), Indian Police Service(IPS), Indian Foreign Service(IFC) and the central group A and group B services in the country.

History

Its origin is related to the 1947 year when on 21st April Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, first Home Minister of Independent India addressed the probationary officers at the All India Administrative Service Training School at Metcalfe House, Delhi. He delivered a powerful speech and empowered the Civil Servants to adopt the true role of national service leaving behind the past experience. In his speech he referred to civil servants as the “steel frame of India.

Purpose 

On this day Prime Minister awards for excellence in Public Administration are presented to district units for implementation of priority programs and innovations in different categories. The Award function bring together civil servants to connect with each other and learn the good practices being implemented across the nation in the field of public grievance. The civil servants are responsible for implementing all the government policies and schemes successfully up to the root level.

Significance

This day gives civil servants the opportunity for introspection and thinking about future strategies to deal with the challenges being posed by the changing times.The contribution that civil servants make for the good of society and the nation is immense. This day is celebrated to motivate Civil Service officers and it is a way of showing appreciation for their work and efforts.
