Lt General Manoj Pandey to become new Indian Army chief, will replace General MM Naravane

Lt General Manoj Pandey will be the new chief of the Indian Army. Lt General Manoj Pandey will replace the current Indian Army chief General MM Naravane. 

Lt General Manoj Pandey will be the first engineer to become the Indian Army chief. He is scheduled to succeed General Manoj Mukund Naravane, who due to retire this month on April 30.

Lt General Pandey, who hails from Nagpur, will be the first officer from an engineering background to be given the command of the Indian Army. Till now, only officersfrom the infantry, armored divisions and the artillery have become chiefs in the Indian Army. 

Lt General Pandey became the Vice Chief of Army Staff on February 1, 2022. He has led many operations at the Sikkim and Ladakh borders adjacent to China-occupied Tibet.

ADGPI has welcomed the soon-to-be Indian Army chief by tweeting from its official Twitter handle.

“General MM Naravane #COAS & All Ranks of #IndianArmy congratulate Lieutenant General Manoj Pande #VCOAS on being appointed as the 29th Chief of the Army Staff #COAS of the #IndianArmy. Lt Gen Manoj Pande will assume the appointment of #COAS on 01 May 2022,” ADGPI posted on Twitter.

Lt General Pandey is trained from National Defense Academy. He was commissioned into the Corps of Engineers in December 1982. He commanded the Engineer Regiment during Operation Parakram in Palanwala Sector on the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. 

After the terrorist attack on Parliament in December 2001, a large number of military forces were deployed along the India-Pakistan border as part of Operation Parakram. At that time India and Pakistan were on the brink of war.

In his military career spanning 39 years, Lt General Pandey has commanded an Engineer Brigade in the Western Theatre, an Infantry Brigade on the LoC, a Mountain Division in Ladakh and a Corps in the Northeast. Prior to taking charge of the Eastern Command, he was the Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command.
