K'taka contractor death: KS Eshwarappa visits Sree Siddaganga Mutt in Tumakuru, to tender resignation today

Tumakuru (Karnataka):

Ahead of tendering resignation to Karnataka Chief Minister Basavraj Bommai, state Minister KS Eshwarappa visits Sree Siddaganga Mutt in Tumakuru. The minister will resign from the ministerial post amid the row over the alleged suicide of contractor Santosh Patil.

Eshwarappa on Thursday announced to handover his resignation today (April 15) to state Chief Minister Basavraj Bommai. The Opposition in the state, Congress, has been demanding his resignation in connection with the death of contractor named Santosh Patil.

KS Eshwarappa had said, “Tomorrow I’m handing over the resignation letter to CM. I thank you all for co-operation.”

Earlier in the day, Bommai asked the Opposition to not act as a judge or investigation officer as the probe into the matter is going on. He said, “No need for the Opposition to become an investigation officer or judge as everything will come out after probe,” the Chief Minister said.

Speaking on the resignation of the accused minister, Bommai said, “Eshwarappa has decided to resign on his own. He will tender his resignation today evening. He has expressed that he will come out from all allegations soon. The police will investigate the matter from all angles.”

However a day earlier, the Chief Minister had opined that the decision on the resignation of the accused minister will be taken after receiving the preliminary report from the police.

Eshwarappa had earlier offered to submit his resignation if state Chief Minister Basavraj Bommai asks. However, he later denied stepping down from the post and said that ‘there is no question of me resigning’.

Follwing that, the Congress continued to protest against the accused minister demanding his arrest and resignation.

The 37-year-old contractor allegedly committed suicide in a lodge in Udupi on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday by consuming some poisonous substance, according to police.

The contractor had earlier alleged that Eshwarappa demanded commission for the release of funds for the civil works undertaken by him at Hindalga village in Belagavi district ahead of a festival.

Prashant Patil (brother of the deceased) said, “Minister KS Eshwarappa, Basawaraj and Ramesh (Eshwarappa’s close aides) must be arrested. We want justice.”
