Kanyakumari Conversion Row: TN Edu Min Anbil Mahesh seeks report; Teacher suspended, arrested

Kanyakumari (Tamil Nadu):

Tamil Nadu Education Minister Anbil Mahesh sought a detailed report on the matter regarding the suspension of a teacher who were suspended here for allegedly promoting Christianity and making attempts at religious conversion in a government higher secondary school.

Tamil Nadu Education Minister Anbil Mahesh said, “We have suspended the teacher but awaiting a detailed inquiry (report) on what exactly happened…We have (issued) appointment circulars to all government schools (on) what steps to be taken…”

The teacher was arrested after parents of a class 6 student have filed a complaint against him for making objectionable statements about Hindus to a student and glorifying Christianity.

Following the complaints, the teacher were suspended.

As per media reports, the incident came into light when a video of a girl accusing the teacher of criticising Gita (Hindu mythology book) went viral.

Earlier this year, one such case reached to Supreme Court where a 17-year old girl from a poor background, who studied in a Christian Missionary School in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur district died by suicide allegedly after being forced to convert to Christianity by her school.

Allegations of torture after her refusal to convert were also raised by the girl. According to Police, the victim had consumed poisonous material on January 9 and had succumbed ten days later.
