India supporting present Government - Prof. Swamy

Almost everybody in India is supporting the incumbent Government in Sri Lanka, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker Prof. Subramanian Swamy said.

Joining in the Dasadesin Hatha Programme hosted by Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) Chairman Hudson Samarasinghe yesterday, he said, “As far as India is concerned, earlier on, I was almost alone in supporting the Rajapaksa Government, but today almost everybody wants to see that it succeeds”.

“We recognize that without Sri Lanka our own security will be under threat. We would like to see the Rajapaksa Government successfully overcoming this crisis. Keep at it and you will win,” he said.

He commended the Government’s decision to go to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), observing that an IMF bailout of USD 2 billion saved India when it faced a similar crisis 32 years ago.

“Thirty two years ago, when Chandra Shekhar Singh was the Prime Minister, I was a Senior Most Minister in that Government. An exactly the same problem occurred. At that time, I was able to get the support of the IMF for US$ 2 billion. Similarly, due to some unfortunate events, Sri Lanka has faced a difficult situation today. These are all rectifiable setbacks in my opinion. It requires determination to continue,” Prof Swamy said.
