Gujarat: Police fire tear gas shells as communal clashes break out during Ram Navami processions

Himmatnagar (Gujarat): 

Communal clashes broke out during Ram Navami processions in Himmatnagar and Khambhat cities of Gujarat on Sunday. This communal clash took place between two communities. 

During this clash, there was heavy stone pelting, apart from this a large number of shops and vehicles were damaged. To control them, the police had to fire tear gas shells.

What did the police say?

After the clash between the two communities, police officials said that the exact number of injured could not be ascertained yet. The police said that Ram Navami processions were taken out in the afternoon in Chhapariya area of Himmatnagar city of Sabarkantha district. 

During this procession, people of two communities pelted stones at each other. 

“The police had to use tear gas shells to bring the situation under control. After this, additional police force was called from outside the city to bring the situation under control,” officials told the media.

Why the controversy?

A police control room official said that a clash broke out during a Ram Navami procession at Khambhat in Anand district. During this incident, stones were pelted against each other by two groups. Several shops and vehicles were also damaged.
