First case of new XE variant of Covid-19 in India comes to fore in THIS city

Mumbai:

The first case of Covid-19’s XE variant in India was reported on Wednesday in Mumbai, Maharashtra. One sample was found to be infected with the XE variant in the 11th genome sequencing results published by the civic body Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). In addition, a case was discovered to be related to the Kappa version.

The BMC tested 230 people, and 99.13 per cent (228 people) tested positive for the Omicron strain. This strain is the one that accelerated the virus’s spread across the country earlier this year, resulting in the third wave.

XE variant, which spreads faster than Omicron, was discovered in the United Kingdom for the first time. The BMC, Mumbai’s civic body, announced that a 50-year-old woman had been infected. According to reports, the woman was fully vaccinated against the virus and has not yet shown any symptoms. She is also said to be suffering with another disease.

The woman, a costume designer, arrived from South Africa on February 10, 2022. She tested negative for Covid-19 upon arrival in India, but on March 2, 2022, during routine testing, she was found positive, and she quarantined herself at Taj Lands End in suburban Bandra, Mumbai. Her sample, however, came back negative the next day.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the new subvariant ‘XE,’ a hybrid strain of two Omicron subvariants, may be the most transmissible coronavirus strain ever discovered. Early research indicates that the variant spreads 10 times faster than BA.2, one of the most infectious forms.
