Every year on April 22, Earth Day is observed. Earth Day is dedicated to the bountiful Mother Nature and with each passing year, as the world battles a climate crisis, Earth Day is gaining significance.

HISTORY

Earth day has been celebrated since 1970. It was first observed in the United States when some 20 million people took to the streets to protest against the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill. Since then, the occasion has played an important role in raising awareness on other environmental issues. In 2009 the United Nation declared 22nd April as ‘International Mother Earth Day’

SIGNIFICANCE

According to the UN International Mother Earth Day is celebrated as a reminder to protect the environment, restored the damaged ecosystem and live more sustainable life. The United Nations also states that “The healthier our ecosystems are, the healthier the planet – and its people. Restoring our damaged ecosystems will help to end poverty, combat climate change and prevent mass extinction.

According to the Earth day organization the world’s largest recruiter to the environmental movement is to “diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement to worldwide.

THEME

The theme for Earth Day 2022 is “Invest In our Planet” calling for businesses to shift towards sustainable practices. The theme highlights the need for people to come together and start taking measures to protect biodiversity and the planet. Climate change is no longer a distant thing of the future and with increasing incidents of floods and fires.
