Delhi: Renewed stone-pelting in Jahangirpuri, crime branch team attacked

New Delhi: 

The Jahangirpuri area of New Delhi, which had been hit by communal violence during Hanuman Jayanti last Saturday, witnessed fresh stone-pelting on Monday.

According to reports, officers of the Crime Branch, which has constituted a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the Jahangirpuri violence, were attacked when they were questioning a woman about Saturday’s incident.

According to officials, the crime branch has been asked to use the facial recognition system (FRS) to investigate and assist the “Bangladeshi aspect”. This came after several BJP leaders alleged that the violence in Jahangirpuri was triggered by the involvement of illegal Bangladeshi migrants.

The Crime Branch SIT has five Assistant Commissioners of Police and 10 Inspectors.

The Special CP (Crime) has asked one inspector to verify the Bangladeshi aspect and another inspector to collect the videos from social media and electronic media. 

“They have also been asked to check the call logs of the Police Control Room (PCR) and record their statements to meet all the callers,” an official said.

According to police, at least eight of the accused in the case so far have criminal records, some of whom have been arrested earlier on charges ranging from rioting to attempt to murder.

Meanwhile, a new video of the Jahangirpuri violence has surfaced, in which a man is seen openly firing. Delhi Police sub-inspector Medha Lal Meena, who was injured in the firing, said that the police had initially separated the two communities when a dispute broke out outside a mosque in Jahangirpuri. 

The police have so far arrested 23 people in this case. These include Aslam, who shot Sub-Inspector Meena. A country-made pistol was recovered from him. Another person, Ansar, who started the fight, has also been arrested, police said.
