Constitutional Amendment alone will not solve crisis - UNP

The proposed 21st Amendment to the Constitution alone would not provide solutions to the real problems of the public at this moment when the entire country and the people have faced a crisis, United National Party Chairman Vajira Abeywardena said.

He said road protests have been organized by the public seeking relief to the skyrocketing inflation, gas, fuel, electricity, milk powder and medicines.

Abeywardena speaking to the media in Galle yesterday said it is the prime responsibility of all public representatives in Parliament to find solutions to the difficulties faced by the public at this critical juncture.

Although UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe insisted for two years that Sri Lanka should seek the support of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the present government did not pay attention to it thus further worsening the problem, he added.

He said the government had met the IMF recently without a proper study on the current situation in the country and proper resolutions to solve the crisis.

The discussions could have become more successful if the government presented a more agreeable proposal to the IMF, Abeywardena said.
