The city fire department stated on Tuesday (local time) that multiple persons were shot at a subway station in Brooklyn. According to news agency AFP, at least 13 people were shot and multiple are severely injured.
Earlier, a law enforcement official stated that preliminary information suggested that five persons were shot.
The attack occurred during the morning rush hour on Tuesday at the Sunset Park 36th Street stop.
According to The New York Times, the shooter is still on the loose in the neighbourhood. The police are looking for a man wearing a gas mask and wearing an orange work vest.
According to some accounts, explosives were discovered at the scene of the attack, which occurred at 8:30 a.m. local time during morning rush hour. Trains have been halted, according to local media.
However, the New York Police Department (NYPD) tweeted, “Due to an investigation, avoid the area of 36th Street and 4th Avenue area in Brooklyn. Expect emergency vehicles and delays in the surrounding area,” adding that there were “no active explosive devices.”
“In regard to the multiple people shot at the 36th Street subway station in Brooklyn, there are NO active explosive devices at this time. Any witnesses are asked to call @NYPDTips at #800577TIPS. Please stay clear of the area. More provided information when available,” NYPD tweeted.
Police officers were called to the 36th Street subway station, where the D, N and R lines pass through the Sunset Park neighbourhood, at around 8:30 a.m., a Police Department spokeswoman said. They had also received reports of smoke inside the station, reported The New York Times.
Transit officials said that trains on the D, N and R lines would be delayed because of an unspecified investigation.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates the city’s subway, said no additional details were immediately available.
A spokesman for Mayor Eric Adams declined to comment as reports were still preliminary.
